Abstract
Pedro Cañas Abril (1902-1992) uno de los principales gestores y fundador de la Universidad de Oriente el 10 de octubre de 1947, siempre sostuvo la premisa que la enseñanza superior debía tener una base experimental y de investigación científica. Su labor como miembro de la Comisión Nacional de la Reforma de la Enseñanza Superior le permitió materializar sus aspiraciones aún cuando ya había emprendido métodos educacionales que mostraron una relación entre teoría y práctica objetivo básico de dicha Reforma.Realizar una valoración de la Reforma Universitaria vista por Pedro Cañas con énfasis en los procesos de investigación y modernización de los métodos pedagógicos y que él ejemplifica desde la Geografía como ciencia constituye el objetivo principal de este trabajo a 50 años de tan trascendental cambio educacional.
