This paper proposes a reading of Excursión al Río Salado y al Chaco (1857), by Amédée Jacques, as a travel narrative that can be included in the textual corpus that Claudia Torre (2010) calls the Argentine nineteeth-century 'expeditionary narrative'. As a hypothesis, it is argued that, in his narration, the French scholar –and later, explorer– interlaces multiple perspectives of observation and develops a singular construction of space based on a design of gradations, chiaroscuros and vanishing lines. Also, this spatial representation articulated by the text presents a historical dimension which, in the manner of a time triptych, weaves past, present and future
