Abstract
Tourism, over the centuries has been a conscious tool for the defence of the urban identity of Siena by its ruling class. The myth of the “regina gotica” (gothic queen) represented exactly this, facing the challenges of modernization. At the same time, anyway, tourism was a means of introducing progress without denying tradition, adopted by the senise ruling class, to strengthen its urban identity.
