Abstract
Ao retornar aos Lele do Kasai (Congo), em 1987, vinte e cinco anos após sua pesquisa de campo, a autora é informada sobre fatos que tinham ocorrido no final dos anos 70 e início dos anos 80. Um grande surto antifeitiçaria tomara conta do país lele, sendo liderado por missionários católicos, nativos e não-nativos. O artigo relata as brutalidades cometidas nesse período contra supostos feiticeiros, inserindo esses fatos em um duplo contexto: por um lado, aquele da religião lele e de sua teoria para explicar o infortúnio; por outro, aquele advindo da pregação missionária e da conversão. Por fim, procura entender as razões para a ocorrência de um surto tão violento e analisa a incapacidade da Igreja Católica, tanto para oferecer respostas às questões que afligem os africanos, como para compreender suas doutrinas religiosas.
