Abstract
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; text-indent: 35.4pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Este artigo discorre sobre questões de africanidade, negritude e os processos de manutenção da identidade quilombola na comunidade<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>do Quilombo Mata Cavalo localizadas no município de Livramento - MT. Assentados naquela localidade<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>a mais de cento e vinte anos os descendentes dos escravos que herdaram essa área de terra resistem, ainda hoje, à pressão dos fazendeiros daquela região pela disputa em torno da sua<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>posse. Esta singular identidade<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>possibilita pelas vias jurídicas a legitimação<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>da propriedade das terras em litígio ao mesmo tempo em que<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>coloca esses atores históricos no centro da convergência de seus próprios valores étnicos e culturais. Ao admitirem-se<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>negros e ao mesmo tempo quilombolas<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>assumem, numa certa medida, o controle de suas próprias vidas. Em pleno século XXI os integrantes dessa comunidade tradicional lutam pela preservação de uma memória afro-referenciada enquanto sonham conquistar seu espaço primordial, um espaço de negro, numa sociedade marcada por interesses difusos e pelo estigma da globalização. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 150%; text-indent: 35.4pt; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span></p>
