Um tema central do pensamento social brasileiro é examinado na análise comparativa de três clássicos deste século, mediante um confronto entre três orientações básicas desses autores em relação ao tema, nas suas várias dimensões: o "realismo" (Sérgio Buarque de Holanda) o "otimismo" (Gilberto Freyre) e o "pessimismo" (Oliveira Vianna).
