With the aim of analyzing the iconography and the maps of the Philosophical Journey (1783-1792) led by Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, this work follows an excursion to the Rio Tocantins in the captaincy of the Grão-Pará, realized in January 1784, when the Designer José Joaquim Freire (1760-1844) prepared the Prospectus of the town of Cameta. The relationship between cartography and painting, so characteristic of travel prospectuses, emerges from an interaction between the Portuguese traditions of architectural design, military engineering, navigation and map-making. However, certain aspects related to territorial occupation and Portuguese colonial policies in the region were also instrumental in drafting the prospectus of the trip, which showed where and how settlements were established in the Amazon region. Thus, this article analyzes the Prospectus of the town of Cameta in the context in which it was produced. It focuses on elements that elucidate the authorship, date, and place of the image, as well as the goals of image making and the influences of other authors from an interdisciplinary perspective drawing on the history of Luso-Brazilian arts, technology and science.
