Abstract
El desarrollo artesanal de mediados del siglo XIX llevó al surgimiento de asociaciones gremiales conocidas como Sociedades Democráticas de Artesanos. Estos jugaron en ese período un papel importante en el aspecto político del país; sin embargo, el triunfo del liberalismo libre-cambista pone de manifiesto las contradicciones de clase al interior de las "Democráticas" y las lleva a su virtual desaparición.
