Abstract
Em 1802, era criada uma biblioteca para prover lentes e alunos da Real Academia dos Guardas-Marinha, instituição militar de ensino que formava o oficialato empregado na Marinha portuguesa, de saberes diversos relacionados com a atividade de uma marinha de guerra. Com a vinda daquela Academia junto com a Corte, a Biblioteca dos Guardas-Marinha tornou-se a primeira biblioteca pública a funcionar no Rio de Janeiro. Contudo, é a organização temática estabelecida pelo seu primeiro diretor que demonstra o entrelaçamento entre conteúdos científicos e artes mecânicas na formação profissional do oficialato militar-naval no período joanino.
