Abstract
The issues related to celibacy, chastity, sexual continence or virginity have often awakened a controversy within Christian society in the West. This can be evidenced for example in the provisions made in the Gregorian Reform with respect to clerical Nicolaism during the Middle Ages or to the recent Movement for Optional Celibacy (MOCEOP) which aims at abolishing the practice of compulsory celibacy in the Catholic Church and proves this question is still today open to debate. In the military orders, as a military and religious institution, this debate also generated various conflicts. In this study, we will focus specifically on the Order of Santiago that held an exceptional position on this issue.
