Abstract
Este artigo examina as singularidades do diário íntimo do Memorial de Aires, último romance de Machado de Assis, relacionando- as às especificidades da matéria histórica brasileira oitocentista. O autor procura demonstrar que o tratamento dado à forma diário pelo narrador do livro corresponde a práticas sociais típicas das elites do Segundo Reinado no Brasil.
