Abstract
Considerada uma das pouquíssimas vozes femininas da literatura africana anticolonial, da poetisa Maria Manuela Margarido (n. Príncipe, 1925) normalmente se conhece poesia engagée, aquela que constitui parte do corpus fundacional do sistema literário são-tomense. É, portanto, como poetisa empenhada que Manuela Margarido é conhecida: a sua poesia é, de facto, comprometida com o ideário de luta anticolonial e com a crítica social, embora revele, simultaneamente, a dimensão particularizante da insula africana, através da evocação da sua fauna, da flora, da infância e dos usos e costumes. Porém, esta vertente mais lírica da sua poesia já se revelara em Alto como o silêncio, de 1957, seu primeiro e único livro. É essa dialética entre a emoção e a razão e a sobreposição de uma visão intimista da realidade que este ensaio pretende explorar, tendo em conta a prevalência da estética nacionalista no contexto de produção da autora.
