Abstract
La pretensión de este articulo de investigación es el análisis a través de un ejemplo singularizado, el del antiguo Asilo Pola localizado en la ciudad asturiana de Gijón, de la problemática que rodeaba a la beneficencia en España en la época del cambio de siglo. Observaremos como entre los objetivos claves de este tipo de establecimientos estaba la idea de paliar e Intentar poner fin a la mendicidad Infantil, considerada ésta como una verdadera enfermedad social que encontraba en la Ineducación una de las causas de su existencia. Desde una perspectiva sociológica abordaremos las bases en las que se fundamentaban las iniciativas encaminadas a la protección a la infancia, resaltando en este sentido la iniciativa de la Asociación Gijonesa de Caridad, pero sin perder como marco referencial las medidas de tipo legislativo aplicadas en todo el ámbito español. Junto a ello, incluimos un estudio histórico-artístico del asilo gijonés y de la vida cotidiana desarrollada en torno al mismo.
This article tries to anallze, through a singular example —the old Asilo Pola sltuated in the asturian clty of Gijón— all the questions around the beneficence in Spain at the end of 19 th. century and the begining of the 20 th. The end of chlldren baggary was one of its objectlves. This work'll anallze the bases of this kind of initiatives too; in Asturias, but also in Spain. Besides, we include a hlstoric-artistic study about the Asilo Pola and the daily life in this asylum.
