Since 1994, foyers, collective housing for male migrants, have transformed into social housings that match the standard of individual accommodations. These transformations introduced the studio as the new standard of well-being. Therefore, common spaces disappear in the West-African foyer. These shared rooms used to be the symbol of the migrant’s solidarity through migrations, intergenerational tensions and political strikes. The common rooms that remain today are closely controlled by the managers. This article shows the day-to-day space appropriation and the links between time and space in the residency. How are time and space linked in the daily space appropriation? The key role of time in the use of collective and private spaces is highlighted by studying negotiations, strategies and discourses developed by residents. Between architectural constraints and free space, this article analyzes the group resistance facing space individualization.
