Abstract
Esta é a tradução, feita por Hélio de Seixas Guimarães, de um texto de Helen Caldwell, pioneira dos estudos machadianos no exterior, publicado em 1952. Já nesse ensaio ela compara Machado de Assis a Shakespeare, ideia que retomará e desenvolverá com mais ênfase em The Brazilian Othello of Machado de Assis (1960), e também vê no nosso autor uma chave para a compreensão do Brasil. A questão da pertença e do alcance da obra do escritor aparece desde as primeiras linhas e, no desenvolvimento do artigo, a estudiosa norte-americana examina um curioso tópico: a figura do professor na ficção machadiana.
