Uma introdução aos estudos históricos é, genuinamente, uma ampla digressão sôbre a variedade inesgotável de problemas que cercam o trabalho do historiador. Problemas práticos de organização do trabalho, de busca, sistematização e avaliação de fontes; problemas de exploração dos conteúdos destas e de sua aproximação, da construção explicativa do tema e demarcação dos limites da regressão explicativa.
إن المدخل إلى الدراسات التاريخية هو، بحق، استطرادٌ موسَّع يتناول التنوع الذي لا ينضب من المشكلات التي تكتنف عمل المؤرخ. مشكلات عملية تتعلق بتنظيم العمل، والبحث عن المصادر، وتصنيفها المنهجي، وتقييمها؛ ومشكلات تتصل باستكشاف مضامين هذه المصادر ومقاربتها، والبناء التفسيري للموضوع، وتحديد حدود الارتداد التفسيري.
