Abstract
Este artigo apresenta, de forma concisa, um estudo descritivo comparativo dos pronomes demonstrativos no português do Brasil, tal como ocorriam em determinadas partes de jornais do século XIX e início do século XX, bem como em revistas femininas do século XX (seção de cartas). Tal pesquisa se justifica pelo fato de que, embora a norma padrão da lingua portuguesa proponha um sistema ternário para os demonstrativos (este vs. esse vs. aquele), o que ocorre no uso é a existência de um sistema binário (este/esse vs. aquele), que está passando por um fenômeno de especialização das formas. Assim, passa-se a ter: este vs. aquele para marcar o uso exofórico, e esse vs. aquele para marcar o uso endofórico.
