Abstract
A América Latina iniciou, na Igreja católica, certo tipo original de reunião de bispos que assumiu o nome de “Conferência Geral do Episcopado”. Distancia-se da forma dos antigos concílios regionais, por não debater temas dogmáticos, diretamente ligados à formulação das verdades da fé, mas por optar por perspectiva eminentemente pastoral. Visa a responder à pergunta: como ser Igreja na atual situação do Continente latino americano? Analisa-lhe a realidade social, econômica, política, cultural, religiosa e eclesial, reflete teologicamente sobre ela e repensa a pastoral. Difere também dos Sínodos Continentais, criados por João Paulo II, que têm papel puramente consultivo e que terminam com um documento escrito pelo Papa. Eles exprimem bem o centralismo romano. As Conferências, embora não estejam totalmente isentas dele, produzem texto próprio.
