Abstract
O estudo da modalização tem sido compreendido exlusivamente como "a relação que se estabelece entre o sujeito da enunciação e seu enunciado" (MAINGUENEAU, 1990, p.8 apud NEVES, 1996, p. 164), de maneira a revelar como o enunciador se posiciona diante do conteúdo proposicional que enuncia. Entretanto, o objeto de estu­do deste artigo foi definido além do enunciado: no âmbito da moda­lização de Instâncias Enunciativas e não apenas de enunciados cons­ tituintes de tais Instâncias. Em outras palavras: buscando identificar e explicitar mecanismos léxico-sintático-discursivos  agenciados na modalização de Instâncias Enunciativas, pretende-se mostrar que o discurso também é modalizado e não apenas o enunciado. Portanto, a perspectiva por  mim assumida  é modalização do modo de dizer e não do que é dito.
