Le descrizioni di atti alimentari svolgono un ruolo centrale nella narrativa di Thomas Mann. Esse consentono un’analisi approfondita su molti livelli. Mann le usa come dispositivo adatto a rappresentare personaggi e situazioni, mescolando la funzione simbolica a quella realistica. L’articolo indaga il ruolo delle moltissime rappresentazioni di atti alimentari in particolare nella novella Der Tod in Venedig (La morte a Venezia, 1912) e nel romanzo Buddenbrooks (I Buddenbrook, 1901).
