Abstract
El obispo Romano, como titular de la mitra de Tlaxcala-Puebla de los Ángeles, tuvo una importante participación en el tercer Concilio Provincial No­vohispano, que buscaba promulgar el Concilio de Trento y adaptarlo a la Nueva España. La llegada del controvertido virrey marqués de Villamanrique, trajo como consecuencia un enfrentamiento directo con la Iglesia novohispana. Villamanrique, lejos de negociar buscó imponer sus decisiones arbitrariamente, provocando que se le sometiera a una rigurosa visita que se encomendó a don Diego Romano; visita cuya eficacia, se observa en la posterior condena al marqués.
