Abstract
O emprego do marmeleiro como porta-enxerto de pereiras para a formação de plantas anãs constitui prática cultural antiga na Europa, notadamente na França, de cujos trabalhos de seleção, com essa finalidade, resultaram os marmeleiros tipo 'Provence', atualmente disseminados em todo o mundo, nos pomares comerciais de pereiras enxertadas sobre marmeleiro. Propagado vegetativamente, o 'Provence' não é normalmente reconhecido como um tipo de marmeleiro de valor comercial para o aproveitamento de seus frutos. Entretanto, de modo surpreendente, constatou-se em um experimento realizado com essa variedade, na Estação Experimental de Tietê, do Instituto Agronômico, em plantas com quatro anos de condução, e na safra de 1984, uma produção média de 4.750kg/ha de marmelos de bela aparência e ótima qualidade, enquanto 'Portugal', a mais importante variedade cultivada em São Paulo, produziu apenas 2.021kg/ha. Ao lado das boas características produtivas das plantas, os frutos apresentaram-se como de possível aptidão comercial e, industrializados experimentalmente, propiciaram a manufatura de excelente marmelada.
This paper relates the behavior of 'Provence' quince trees at Tietê Experimental Station of the Instituto Agronômico, State of São Paulo, Brazil. This quince variety has been improved mainly to be used in European countries, particularly in France, as pear rootstock for the growing of dwarf pear trees. It is not commercially grown for its fruits utilization. However, it was recently observed that four-year-old 'Provence' quince trees, in the first crop, yielded an average of 4,750kg/ha of high quality fruits. In the some plot, similar 'Portugal' quince trees, the main commercial variety grown in the State of São Paulo, yielded only 2,021Kg/ha. Besides the good characteristics of vigor and fruitfulness of the 'Provence' quince trees, its fruits showed to be an excellent raw material for industrialization as jam of superior quality.
