Abstract
Comparing the various conceptions of our historiography, this paper discusses the issue of a 'paulista' uniqueness in colonial epoch and proposes that there was a structural unity in Brazilian social formation in which São Paulo was embedded. This uniformity was based in big holding, slavery and in the same symbols of honour and prestige.
