Abstract
At the end of December 1996 the bibliographic collection of FIOCRUZ Manguinhos Library, then compound by approximately 620,000 volumes, was strongly attacked by fungus and had to be closed during five months. Several professionals put in motion to solve this problem andreported their experience. This paper joins those reports including three different approaches of the problem: building facilities aspects, bibliographic colletion conservation and people – library patrons and employees – health care.

Em fins de dezembro de 1996 o acervo da Biblioteca de Manguinhos, vinculada ao Centro deInformação Científica e Tecnológica (CICT) da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, contando na época com aproximadamente 620.000 volumes, sofreu um agressivo ataque de fungos, o que provocou a sua interdição por um período cinco meses. Vários profissionais e especialistas se mobilizaram na definição de estratégicas para a solução do problema a partir de três tipos de abordagens: o aspecto da adequação das instalações do prédio, as medidas referentes à higienização e conservação do acervo e as ações relacionadas com a proteção à saúde, tanto dos usuários quanto dos funcionários da Biblioteca e dos demais Departamentos e da própria Diretoria do CICT, que também ocupam as instalações do prédio Haity Moussatché.
