Abstract
La Academia was a typographical workshop in Barcelona founded by a federal republican, led by an anarchist and where republican, freethinking and anarchist press was printed. This article analyzes its evolution and the complex web of political and personal relationships of its employees.
With this analysis we conclude that La Academia was more than a simple printing-house. It became a center of production and dissemination of the liberal democratic thought, strongly rooted among the catalan popular classes in the early stages of the Restoration.
The analysis of the political function of the printing house and its workers would challenge the limits of certain categories of analysis. It also invites to a critical use of analytical tools proposed by other disciplines and shows the porosity of republicanism’s relations with other currents of thought of working and popular classes.
