Abstract
Collaboration between anthropology and epidemiology has a long and tumultuous history. Based on empirical examples, this paper describes a number of epistemological lessons we have learned through our experience of cross disciplinary collaboration. Although critical of both mainstream epidemiology and medical anthropology, our analysis focuses on the implications of addressing each discipline's main epistemological differences, while addressing the goal of adopting a broader social approach to health improvement. We believe it is important to push the boundaries of research collaborations from the more standard forms of "multidisciplinarity," to the adoption of theoretically imbued "interdisciplinarity." The more we challenge epistemological limitations and modify ways of knowing, the more we will be able to provide in-depth explanations for the emergence of disease-patterns and thus, to problem-solve. In our experience, both institutional support and the adoption of a relativistic attitude are necessary conditions for sustained theoretical interdisciplinarity. Until researchers acknowledge that methodology is merely a human-designed tool to interpret reality, unnecessary methodological hyper-specialization will continue to alienate one field of knowledge from the other.
A colaboração entre Antropologia e Epidemiologia tem uma longa e confusa história. Baseado em exemplos empíricos, o artigo descreve lições epistemológicas aprendidas ao longo da nossa trajetória de colaboração transdisciplinar. Apesar de críticos da Epidemiologia e da Antropologia Médica tradicional e crermos que ambas possuem o objetivo de adotar uma abordagem social à promoção da saúde populacional, enfocamos as implicações de confrontar suas principais diferenças epistemológicas. É importante avaliar os limites da colaboração padrão ("multidisciplinaridade") e destacar a relevância de adotar a "interdisciplinaridade." Quanto mais profissionais de diversas disciplinas convergir e modificar seus modos de saber e desafiar suas posturas epistemológicas, mais poderão dar explicações aprofundadas aos padrões de doenças e solucionar problemas concretos. Em nossa experiência, ambos o suporte institucional e a adoção de uma abordagem realista das limitações epistemológicas das disciplinas são necessários à manutenção do grupo e interdisciplinaridade teórica. Até que se perceba que a metodologia é uma ferramenta humana criada para interpretar a realidade, a desnecessária hiperespecialização metodológica das disciplinas continuará a alienar um campo do conhecimento do outro.
يمتلك التعاون بين علم الإنسان (الأنثروبولوجيا) وعلم الأوبئة (الإبيديميولوجيا) تاريخاً طويلاً ومضطرباً. واستناداً إلى أمثلة تجريبية، تستعرض هذه الورقة عدداً من الدروس الإبستمولوجية المستفادة من واقع خبرتنا في التعاون العابر للتخصصات. ورغم نقدنا لكلٍّ من علم الأوبئة السائد والأنثروبولوجيا الطبية، يُركز تحليلنا على تداعيات معالجة الفروق الإبستمولوجية الجوهرية بين التخصصين، مع السعي لتحقيق هدف تبني مقاربة اجتماعية أوسع لتحسين الصحة. ونرى أنه من الضروري دفع حدود التعاون البحثي متجاوزين الأشكال التقليدية لـ "تعددية التخصصات" نحو تبني "بينية التخصصات" المشبعة بالبعد النظري؛ فكلما تحدينا القيود الإبستمولوجية وعَدّلنا طرائق اكتساب المعرفة، زادت قدرتنا على تقديم تفسيرات متعمقة لنشوء أنماط الأمراض، وبالتالي حل المشكلات. ووفقاً لخبرتنا، يُعد كلٌّ من الدعم المؤسسي وتبني موقف نسبي شرطين ضروريين لاستدامة بينية التخصصات النظرية. وما لم يُقر الباحثون بأن المنهجية ليست سوى أداة صممها الإنسان لتفسير الواقع، فإن التخصص المنهجي المفرط وغير الضروري سيستمر في إبعاد حقول المعرفة عن بعضها البعض وتغريبها.
يمتلك التعاون بين الأنثروبولوجيا وعلم الأوبئة تاريخاً طويلاً وشائكاً. واستناداً إلى أمثلة تجريبية، يستعرض المقال دروساً إبستمولوجية مستفادة على مدار مسارنا في التعاون العابر للتخصصات. وبالرغم من نقدنا لكل من علم الأوبئة والأنثروبولوجيا الطبية التقليديين وإيماننا بأن كليهما يهدف إلى تبني مقاربة اجتماعية لتعزيز صحة السكان، فإننا نركز على تداعيات مواجهة الفروق الإبستمولوجية الرئيسة بينهما. ومن المهم تقييم حدود التعاون المعياري ("تعددية التخصصات") وإبراز أهمية تبني "بينية التخصصات". فكلما تلاقى المتخصصون من مختلف الحقول وعدّلوا سُبلهم في المعرفة وتحدوا مواقفهم الإبستمولوجية، زادت قدرتهم على تقديم تفسيرات متعمقة لأنماط الأمراض وحل المشكلات الملموسة. وانطلاقاً من تجربتنا، فإن كلاً من الدعم المؤسسي وتبني مقاربة واقعية للقيود الإبستمولوجية للتخصصات أمران ضروريان لاستمرار الفريق وبينية التخصصات النظرية. وما لم يُدرك أن المنهجية أداة بشرية أُنشئت لتفسير الواقع، فإن التخصص المنهجي المفرط وغير المبرر للتخصصات سيستمر في عزل حقول المعرفة بعضها عن بعض.
