Abstract
Os radicais livres são moléculas orgânicas e inorgânicas que possuem átomos com um ou mais elétrons não pareados, com existência independente. Os principais são o superóxido, a hidroxila, o hidroperóxido e o óxido nítrico. O estresse oxidativo gerado pelo excesso de radicais livres apresenta efeitos prejudiciais, que têm sido relacionados com várias doenças envolvendo o processo inflamatório, como a aterosclerose. Assim, o combate aos radicais livres é importante para evitar o surgimento de doenças, bem como o avanço do conhecimento acerca da existência de doenças geradas pelo processo oxidativo relacionadas ao processo inflamatório pode ser uma importante contribuição para o estudo imunológico e eventuais tratamentos.
