This article is an ex-post translator’s note on the translation into Spanish of Gabriele Pepe’s carte spagnole. Pepe was a captain from Molise (southern Italy) who fought in the Spanish Peninsular War from the Napoleonic side and left three diaries and a number of letters dealing with this experience. The texts, published for the first time in 2009 in bilingual edition, have an enormous documentary value for the historiography of Peninsular War, since they provide the point of view of an eyewitness who was able to report and interpret facts with remarkable critical acumen. This paper discusses translation macro-strategies regarding variation according to the Skopostheorie (Reiss, Vermeer, 1991; Vermeer 1989; Nord, 1991, 1997), which is considered both in terms of its linguistic-textual manifestations (historical, regional, register and idiolectal variation), but also with a view to the extra-linguistic factors that conditioned the translation assignment, in order to motivate why the translator opted for actualization and standardization.<<>>El artículo contiene una reflexión al margen sobre el proceso de traducción al castellano de las carte spagnole de Gabriele Pepe, un capitán molisano que participó en la Guerra de la Independencia española desde el bando invasor y dejó varios escritos, algunos de los cuales hasta el momento inéditos. El texto, publicado en 2009 en edición bilingüe (el original en italiano seguido de la versión en castellano), tiene un valor documental enorme para la historiografía del conflicto napoleónico en el suelo español, puesto que constituye el punto de vista de un testigo presencial del conflicto que supo narrar e interpretar los hechos con gran acumen crítico. En este trabajo, apoyándonos en la Teoría del Escopo (Skopostehorie) (Reiss, Vermeer, 1991; Vermeer 1989; Nord, 1991, 1997), analizamos el tratamiento que reservamos a la variación, entendida tanto a nivel lingüístico-textual (diacrónica, diatópica, diafásica e idiolectal) como a la luz de los factores externos al encargo concreto que fueron el factor decisorio principal de acuerdo al cual nos decantamos por las macroestrategias de la actualización y de la estandarización.
