Abstract
Neste artigo, discuto postulados funcionalistas sobre gramaticalização, tecendo um possível diálogo com os postulados neogramáticos explicitados na obra de Herman Paul. É objetivo, portanto, deste texto aproximar duas correntes linguísticas distantes no tempo, as quais utilizam rótulos distintos para semelhantes referentes. Mostro que os pontos de concórdia entre as duas teorias tornam a perspectiva funcionalista da gramaticalização, em sua vertente clássica, uma extensão do que postulava Paul em seus Princípios fundamentais da história da língua.
