Abstract
Constituem objeto de análise deste texto as relações entre estado, sociedade e educação superior no Brasil Império. Destaca o quanto a formação social escravocrata e a constituição de um estado oligárquico inviabilizaram a criação da universidade no país, limitando a educação superior a cursos de formação profissional, cujas características resistiram às mudanças ocorridas no país, adentraram o século XX, persistindo suas marcas até o presente.
