Abstract
A depressão é considerada hoje em dia, um problema de saúde importante que afecta pessoas de todas as idades, levando a sentimentos de tristeza e isolamento social que muitas vezes têm como desfecho o suicídio.
Contudo, é nas idades avançadas que ela atinge os mais elevados índices de morbilidade e mortalidade, na medida em que assume formas incaracterísticas, muitas vezes difíceis de diagnosticar e, consequentemente, de tratar.
Em consequência, a principal dificuldade que se coloca aos profissionais de saúde é o diagnóstico correcto deste quadro clínico, que, em muitos casos, está associado ao facto de a maioria dos idosos, negar a sua depressão e não procurar tratamento psiquiátrico.
