Abstract
Periodontal disease is most commonly found in humans are gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontitis have a higher prevalence, anaerobic gram-negative periodontal disease were factors one of which is Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) are predominantly found in chronic periodontitis. Cashew leaves have an active compound content of which serves as an antibacterial agent and antiseptic. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of antibacterial extract of cashew (Anacardium occidentale) on the growth of P.gingivalis. This study was purely experimental research design with posttest control group design. Samples were P.gingivalis derived from the Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Muslim Indonesia. The statistical analysis used is the One Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests. The mean diameters of inhibition zone for P.gingivalis on cashew nut leaf extract concentration of 0.1% (9.85 mm), 0.5% (11.15 mm), 2.5% (15.68 mm), 5% (16.15 mm), a positive control (15 mm) and a negative control (0 mm). On the results of statistical analysis showed significant differences (p <0.05) between different concentrations of cashew nut leaf in inhibiting the P. gingivalis. Cashew nut leaf extract is very effective in inhibiting the growth of P. gingivalis. The smallest concentration which can inhibit the growth of bacteria P.gingivalis is 0.1%.
