Resultado de uma pesquisa que teve como objetivo identificar os critérios que propiciaram a política de seleção do acervo do Real Gabinete Português de Leitura e, a partir deles, estabelecer a Política de Seleção que foi praticada pelo Gabinete. Por uma abordagem exploratório-descritiva, utilizando características do acervo, este artigo busca delinear a figura do leitor no período de 1837-1847. Leitura.   Contribution for delineating the profile of the public reader of the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading: 1837-1847   Abstract   The objective of this research is to identify the criteria which brought forth the selection policy of the collection of Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading and to establish the Selection Policy used by the Cabinet. Through an exploratorydescriptive approach and utilization of the collection characteristics, this article delineates the profile of the reader in the period of 1837-1847, and also identifies some other classes of readers and their reading.   Keywords   Real Gabinete Português de Leitura.
