Abstract
The aim of this paper is to think about how the political economy of communication theory can contribute to propaganda research. We support that the cooperation possibilities between those two research fields rest upon deep theoretical links related to concepts such as power and ideology. Considering the mass media as social power tools is another relevant factor regarding to those links. On the other hand, using the political economy of communication theory has also potential consequences for the empirical research of propaganda. Such consequences can be especially productive for the propaganda studies in mass communication and mass culture. However, if we understand propaganda as a trans-historical and universal phenomenon, the application of the political economy of communication ideas finds some limitations. The question of whether all messages can be understood as propaganda is another theoretical problem that comes from a deterministic reading of the political economy of communication.
