Abstract
Although athletics participation provides benefits that can be protective for mental health, stressors unique to athletics are present. This article reviews the frequency and symptoms of the most common mental health concerns impacting collegiate student-athletes. Treatment approaches and best practices are discussed. The importance of prioritizing mental health and well-being at all levels within the university and athletics department by reducing stigma and providing access to providers is emphasized. Multidisciplinary treatment teams and coordination of care provides a holistic approach that ensures student-athletes are able to optimize their personal, social, academic, and athletic goals.Reference Key |
