This brief essay discusses the cultural significance of the recent shooting homicide of a 7-year-old Ute Mountain Ute Indian boy while asleep with his father on the Ute Mountain Ute reservation located in southwest Colorado, USA. Traditional historic tribal crime-control policies of exclusion and removal from the tribal community, and dis-enrollment from the tribe, are discussed as a means to protect tribal children and all future tribal people.
