Se realiza un breve recuento histórico sobre el desarrollo de la cirugía ginecológica, y se enfatiza en la histerectomía como una de las intervenciones más frecuentemente realizadas en esta especialidad médica. Se ofrecen algunos datos de su incidencia en el Hospital "Dr. Eusebio Hernández" durante el período de 1977-1983. Se realiza un análisis sobre las posibles repercusiones que esta puede tener en la sexualidad femenina, así como la conceptualización del maternaje después de este evento quirúrgico. Se hace referencia a la importancia de la actitud de la parte masculina de la pareja humana.
A brief historical account on the development of gynecological surgery is made. Emphasis is given to hysterectomy as one of the most frequent procedures performed in this medical specialty. Some data on its incidence at "Dr. Eusebio Hernández" Hospital from 1977 to 1983 are provided. An analysis is made on the possible impacts it may have on female sexuality, as well as on the conceptualization of mothering after this surgical event. Reference is made to the importance of the male attitude in the human couple.
