Abstract
During the nineteenth century Mexican society began the constitution of a new model of Nation which has incorporated the moral value related to work. Modernization and progress were pivotal elements for that, and the individual has started to be considered for his capacity of contributing with the Nation. The citizen image was closely related to work. In consequence, idlers, gamblers, and unemployed were classified as useless.
