Abstract
More than other cities, port cities must constantly adapt to a rapidly changing international trade environment. This adaptation is spurred by their ties to both maritime and land networks and by specific spatio-functional relations between cities and ports, from the local to the global level. For comparative purposes, this paper proposes a new way to interpret the basic structures and trends underlying these complex, and sometimes contradictory, ties.
