For a healthy economic development is needed to use in a most efficient way the existing natural resources.In this sense, we present some opportunities for economic development of the South-West Oltenia region suggested bythe particularities of this area. We put emphasis on agriculture and tourism because here we identified the greatestpotential for development. Opportunities in agriculture are justified by the existence of large agricultural areas thatare not cultivated and those that are made in an inefficient way. In these cases, an increase in productivity can beachieved by the creation of holdings of large and very large dimensions. Also, the creation of technological chains totransform agricultural products into finished products can rise the number of employees and increase profits. In termsof a usability for about 30% of accommodation in the South West Oltenia development region and a wide range oftourist attractions in the area, the potential for growth in tourism is considerable.
