Organizations are subjected to different pressures in order to persist over time, facilitating the emergence of
an aggressive type of management that is called Toxic Management, understood as a way of exercising power
through egocentric behavior, lacking empathy, ruthlessness and personal ambition. The behavioral characteristics
of those who hold this type of management are related to emotional skills, based on emotional intelligence, which
is the ability of the individual to recognize and control his own feelings, hold an empathic attitude and manage
interpersonal relationships. The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between emotional
intelligence and toxic management among the Heads of the Academic Departments and/or Program Coordinators
at the Universidad de Oriente, Sucre Campus, Cumaná. The field research was performed at a descriptive-
correlational level. The level of emotional intelligence was measured by the test designed by Goleman, and for the
toxic management the test proposed by Piñuel was used. The results show that the level of emotional intelligence
of the sample studied is medium-high, while the risk of the job management is moderate. There is a strong positive
correlation between the variables studied, indicating that the level of toxicity depends on the ability of the
individual to manage emotional competencies
