Abstract
Objective To establish a stable and reliable model of inferior vena cava thrombosis in nude mice. Methods Nude mice were anesthetized, and the inferior vena cava below the renal veins was exposed under microscope in a sterile environment. Infrarenal vena cava was ligated with a 6-0 polypropylene suture. The infrarenal vena cava was subsequently excised at post-operative day 7 or 14. The thrombus resolution, organization and recanalization were observed by HE staining, Masson staining and immunohistochemical staining. Results The success rate of establishment of inferior vena cava thrombosis model in nude mice was 90.48%; The results of HE staining, Masson staining and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated that the resolution and organization of thrombus and angiogenesis were mainly localized in perimeter zones at post-operative day 7, however, almost involved in the centre of thrombus at post-operative day 14. Conclusions The inferior vena cava thrombosis model established in nude mice is not only feasible, but also highly reliable. The basic process of resolution, organization and recanalization of venous thrombus can be reproduced exac tly in the inferior vena cava thrombosis model in nude mice.
