Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo de la mortalidad infantil en el Hospital Ginecoobstétrico Docente de Guanabacoa, en el período comprendido desde enero de 1997 hasta diciembre de 1999. La tasa de mortalidad infantil en estos 3 años fue de 3,8 por 1 000 nacidos vivos (NV). El año 1999 tuvo el mejor resultado con una tasa de 1,8 por 1 000 NV. El componente neonatal precoz fue de 3,1 por 1 000 NV (con un total de 22 defunciones) y éste representó el 81,7 % del total de fallecidos, mientras que en el componente neonatal tardió sólo hubo 3 defunciones para una tasa de 0,4 por 1 000 NV, lo cual representó el 11,1 % del número total de defunciones. La mortalidad posneonatal se comportó favorablemente con solo 2 fallecidos para una tasa de 0,3 por 1 000 NV. Se encontró que el 25,9 % de los fallecidos tuvo como causa de muerte la sepsis, seguida por la asfixia y las malformaciones con 22,2 % cada una. Hubo sólo 2 defunciones por membrana hialina en 1997, lo que representó el 7,4 % del total de fallecidos.
A retrospective analysis of the infant mortality in the Teaching Gynecological and Obstetric Hospital in Guanabacoa from January 1997 to December 1999 was conducted. The infant mortality rate in these 3 years was 3,8 per 1000 live births. 1999 exhibited the best result with a rate of 1.8 per 1000 live births. The early neonatal component was 3,1 per 1000 live births (22 deaths) representing 81,7% of the total deaths whereas the late neonatal component was 0,4 per 1000 live births, with 3 deaths, which represented 11,1% of the total number of dead infants. Postneonatal mortality rate was favorable with only 2 deceased for a rate of 0,3 per 1000 live births. It was found that 25,9% of deaths was caused by sepsis followed by asphyxia and malformations with 22,2% respectively.
