avanÇos e obstÁculos para a certificaÇÃo de um geoparque em caÇapava do sul, “capital gaÚcha da geodiversidade”

Abstract

We discuss potential, ongoing efforts and difficulties for the settlement and certification of a geopark for the municipality of Caçapava do Sul (RS), Brazil. The territory comprises a unique geological context on a continental level. There are well-established initiatives of geoeducation and geotourism, as a result of a partnership among public universities (UNIPAMPA, UFSM, and UFPEL), the mayor's office and the local communities. On the other hand, Caçapava do Sul presents low levels of human, social and economic development, which reflect in its weak tourism. Another problem is the complete absence of protected areas, necessary for infrastructure for the protection of its geoheritage.
