In the face of the existence of reluctance to the process of Turkey’s accession to the EU, founded principally on deeply rooted prejudices and a lack of knowledge about the changing Turkish society, which is in constant evolution and modernisation, it is useful to examineone of the areas in which European public opinion displays greatest concern: the situation of women in Turkey, generally dealt with in the European media only when it refers to horrible honour killings. For a long time, the institutions of the EU seemed to pay scantattention to this issue, but it is important to emphasise that, currently, women’s rights have found a solid place on the agenda of relations between the EU and Turkey.
